Considered by many to be the best charcoal grill available, the PK Grill and Smoker provides casual grillers and BBQ enthusiasts a top quality outdoor cooking experience by excelling at both hot and fast grilling and low and slow barbecue or smoke cooking. PK Grills’ thick cast design is made from aluminum which is inherently rustproof and conducts heat more efficiently than steel. Its unique four-way venting system provides full control of airflow and temperature. The company’s products include its iconic grill and smoker and a variety of custom apparel and accessories. First created in 1952, the classically designed PK Grill continues to offer new generations of grillers great food, great stories and a point of distinction among outdoor grills.
PK Grills History
In the early 1950’s, Hilton Meigs of Tyler Texas made what many consider the perfect charcoal barbecue grill. He designed and manufactured a cast aluminum grill and smoker calling it the “Portable Kitchen” and sold it around the mid-south out of the back of his car. In 1960 the company was bought by Lewis Hamlin and manufacturing moved to Little Rock, Arkansas where it remained until a fire and business issues stopped production in the mid-1970’s. The somewhat legendary durability of this charcoal grill ensured that thousands of them still existed in perfect working order by the end of the 1990’s when a local attorney found one in Little Rock, AR. In 1998, grill enthusiast Paul James discovered a Portable Kitchen Charcoal Grill and Smoker at a yard sale. His interest sparked, he purchased the Portable Kitchen name and began producing sparkling new aluminum PK grills from castings of the original product. After a twenty year hiatus, PK was back in business in Little Rock. Over 60 years since its inception, the grills today are nearly identical to the one Hilton Meigs made all those years ago. |
Why is the PK Charcoal Grill & Smoker superior?
In addition to being a very effective way to direct the flow of flavorful smoke over your food, the PK 4-way venting system (two adjustable vents in the top lid and two dampers under the fire) provides easy and accurate temperature control for every style of cooking without flare-ups from dripping fat. With the lid closed and the vents open, not enough oxygen can enter the cooker to support a flame. So, whether you are cooking fast with high heat or slow with low heat, close the lid and the PK's venting system naturally suppresses scorching flames to ensure your BBQ comes out brag-worthy time after time.

What Separates this Grill from other PK Grills? Now that you know what makes the PKTX better than other types of grills, what separates it from our other grills? The PKTX takes everything that is great about our Original PK Grill and puts it on a clever folding cart that makes it easy to take anywhere you need to grill.
- The PKTX is slightly taller than the Original PK, designed to be standard working height, and it's loaded with real rubber wheels, not plastic ones.
- The PKTX uses the same capsule and therefore has the same cooking surface area as the Original PK.
- The PKTX has slightly less volume and headroom in the capsule (4080 cubic in. vs 5374 cubic in.) than the PK360. Still plenty of room of roasted chicken and some veggies.
- The PKTX combines a classic look with a convenient touch. It folds down to become it's own rolling cart. You can even throw a bag of charcoal on it and pull it with ease to the cookout or cookoff (for you competitive types.)
PKTX's Construction Eliminates Hot Spots
PKTX's Construction Eliminates Hot Spots. Unlike other grills, the PKTX cook chamber is constructed entirely from aluminum. Aluminum conducts heat 4x more efficiently than steel, which means heat is dispersed evenly throughout the capsule. Say goodbye to expensive mistakes and hello to evenly cooked meats and veggies.PKTX's Construction is Rust-Proof
PKTX's Construction is Rust-Proof. Your PKTX will be with you through decades of sunshine, rain, sleet, snow, humidity, disco music, you name it. PK grills produced before the moon landing are still cooking strong to this day, so buying a rust-proof aluminum PK saves you dollars in the long run.Our industry-leading 20 year warranty.

PKTX Grill is better than gas, pellet, kamado and other charcoal grills
- GAS GRILLS: Gas grills are convenient to turn on and off, but you can’t get flavor from a gas flame. The smoky flavor that burning wood or charcoal imparts to grilled foods IS the point of outdoor cooking. Additionally, many gas grills are manufactured out of inexpensive sheet metal components which will break or rust over time. $500 to $1000 to replace a rusted or broken gas grill every few years adds up.
- PELLET GRILLS: Pellet grills can produce a little more flavor than gas grills can, but they must use mechanical augers to feed the tiny pellets into the cook chamber. These augers are prone to jamming and breakage as are the electronic components required to control their operation. Pellet grills require electricity to run which makes them much less portable. With a pellet grill, forget about cooking at the campsite, beach or tailgate without a generator.
- KAMADO GRILLS: Ceramic egg-type grills have become very popular and they cook well. Unfortunately, kamado grills are made of porcelain, making them extremely heavy, fragile and not very portable. And once a Kamado gets hot, it stays hot for a long time which makes it hard to modulate the temperature. A cast aluminum PK Grill can efficiently increase or decrease temps with the smart use of venting and fuel.
- OTHER CHARCOAL GRILLS: So, if charcoal grills are #1 when it comes to flavor, why shouldn't you buy just any charcoal grill? Typical charcoal grills have only 2 vents (one exhaust vent on top and another vent below). This limits your control over air and heat flow. Many of these grills are cheaply constructed and prone to rusting. Replacing a rusted or broken grill every few years adds up over time. Buy a PK. Be happy.
The PKTX is the king of the tailgate.
