Gas Fireplace Remote Not Working: Complete Troubleshooting Guide
You press the button on your gas fireplace remote and nothing happens. No click from the valve, no flame, no response at all. A non-working fireplace remote is one of the most common service calls we hear about, and in most cases it's a problem you can solve yourself without calling a technician.
This guide covers all the major gas fireplace remote control systems — SIT Proflame, Skytech, and Mertik Maxitrol — with specific troubleshooting steps for each.
Before You Start: Basic Checks
Before diving into system-specific troubleshooting, rule out these common issues first:
1. Check the Batteries
This sounds obvious, but dead batteries cause the majority of remote control failures. Gas fireplace remotes use batteries in both the handheld transmitter and the receiver module inside the fireplace.
- Transmitter (handheld remote): Most use AAA or AA batteries, some use CR2032 coin cells. Replace them with fresh, name-brand alkaline batteries — not rechargeable.
- Receiver module: The receiver box inside the fireplace also requires batteries, typically AA or D-cell depending on the system. Many homeowners don't realize the receiver has batteries too.
Pro tip: Replace batteries in BOTH the transmitter and receiver at the same time. Weak batteries in either unit can cause intermittent operation.
2. Check the Pilot Light
Most millivolt remote systems require the pilot light to be lit before the remote can activate the main burner. If your pilot is out, the remote won't fire the main burner regardless of whether the remote system itself is working.
If your pilot won't stay lit, that's a separate issue — see our guide on pilot light troubleshooting.
3. Check the Manual Override
Most gas fireplace remote systems have a manual on/off switch on the receiver or the gas valve. Try operating the fireplace manually to determine whether the problem is with the remote system or the fireplace itself.
- If the fireplace works manually but not with the remote, the problem is in the remote system (transmitter, receiver, or pairing).
- If the fireplace doesn't work manually either, the problem is likely the gas valve, thermopile, or wiring — not the remote.
SIT Proflame Remote Systems
SIT Proflame systems are among the most common in modern gas fireplaces, used by brands like Heat N Glo, Heatilator, and Quadra-Fire. They come in several generations: Proflame 1, Proflame 2, and Proflame GTMF.
Common SIT Proflame Issues
Remote Won't Pair or Has Lost Connection
Proflame systems use a learning/pairing process between the transmitter and receiver. If this pairing is lost (often after a battery change), you'll need to re-pair them:
- Remove batteries from both transmitter and receiver for 30 seconds.
- Reinstall receiver batteries first.
- Within 30 seconds, reinstall transmitter batteries.
- Press and hold the MODE button on the transmitter for 5 seconds until the LED flashes.
- The receiver should beep or click to confirm pairing.
If pairing fails repeatedly, the receiver module may need replacement.
Proflame Receiver LED Codes
The small LED on the Proflame receiver indicates system status:
- Solid green: System is operating normally.
- Flashing green: Receiving a signal from the transmitter.
- Solid red: Fault condition — check wiring connections and thermopile voltage.
- No light: No power — check batteries or thermopile output.
Thermopile Voltage Too Low
Proflame receivers draw power from the thermopile. If the thermopile output is weak (below 300 mV), the receiver may not have enough power to operate, even with batteries installed. Test your thermopile output as described in the pilot light troubleshooting guide.

Skytech Remote Systems
Skytech is one of the most popular aftermarket fireplace remote brands. Their systems range from basic on/off remotes to full thermostatic and timer models. Common models include the Skytech 1001, 3301, 5301, and 5310 series.
Common Skytech Issues
Remote Shows Signal But Fireplace Won't Light
If the Skytech receiver's LED responds when you press buttons but the fireplace doesn't ignite:
- Check the wire connections from the receiver to the gas valve. The two wires from the receiver connect to the TH (thermostat) terminals on the gas valve or the wall switch terminals.
- Make sure the receiver's on/off switch is in the ON position.
- Verify the pilot is lit and the thermopile is generating adequate voltage.
Skytech Receiver Won't Power On
- Replace the batteries — Skytech receivers use AA batteries (typically 2 or 4, depending on model).
- Check battery orientation — it's easy to accidentally insert one backwards.
- Look for corrosion on the battery contacts. Clean with a pencil eraser or fine sandpaper if needed.
Range Problems
If the remote only works when you're very close to the fireplace:
- Fresh batteries will restore full range.
- Make sure the receiver antenna wire is fully extended and not coiled up inside the fireplace cavity.
- Metal fireplace enclosures can reduce signal range. Try repositioning the receiver with the antenna pointing outward.

Mertik Maxitrol Remote Systems
Mertik Maxitrol systems are commonly found in Napoleon, Continental, and Wolf Steel fireplaces. They use the GV60 and G6R receiver/valve systems, which integrate the remote receiver directly into the gas valve in some models.
Common Mertik Maxitrol Issues
Receiver Beeps But Won't Ignite
The Mertik system uses a series of beeps to indicate status:
- One beep: Command received, executing normally.
- Two beeps: Command received but flame not detected — possible ignition failure.
- Three beeps: System lockout — the system tried to ignite multiple times and failed. You'll need to reset the system.
To reset after a lockout, turn the system off, wait 60 seconds, then try again. If lockout persists, check the pilot, igniter, and gas supply.
Remote Pairing for Mertik Systems
- Press and hold the LEARN button on the receiver for 5 seconds until the LED starts flashing.
- Press any button on the transmitter within 30 seconds.
- The LED will flash quickly then go solid to confirm pairing.

Wiring Issues Common to All Systems
Regardless of the remote brand, wiring problems between the receiver and gas valve can prevent operation:
- Loose wire connections — Vibration, heat cycling, and time can loosen spade connectors and wire nuts. Check all connections at the receiver and gas valve.
- Corroded terminals — Moisture and age cause corrosion on spade connectors. Clean or replace corroded connectors.
- Reversed polarity — Some systems are polarity-sensitive. If the fireplace stops working after a receiver replacement, try swapping the two wires.
- Wire damage — Check for heat-damaged, pinched, or chewed wiring (rodents occasionally damage fireplace wiring).
When to Replace the Entire Remote System
Consider replacing the complete remote system (transmitter and receiver) rather than individual components if:
- The system is more than 10-15 years old
- Replacement parts for your specific model are no longer available
- You want to upgrade from a basic on/off remote to a thermostat or timer model
- The receiver has physical damage or corroded battery compartments
Aftermarket systems like Skytech are compatible with most millivolt gas fireplaces and offer a straightforward upgrade path. Visit our complete remote control collection to explore your options.
When to Call a Professional
Contact a qualified technician if:
- The fireplace doesn't work manually or with the remote
- You see error codes on the receiver that you can't resolve
- There are signs of electrical damage, burning, or melting on any components
- The system uses an integrated electronic ignition (IPI) that requires specialized equipment to diagnose
- You're not comfortable working with the electrical connections inside the fireplace
For most remote control issues, though, the fix is as simple as fresh batteries, a re-pairing procedure, or a new receiver module. Start with the basics before assuming the worst.
