Which Model 91 parts wear out?
Three things account for most Model 91 service calls. The convection blower motor (Fasco front-mount PE910714 or PE300714) runs every hour the stove does and is the usual cause of a stove that heats but no longer moves air; a humming motor that will not spin, or one that only runs on high, is a motor, not a switch. The lower catalyst shield (PS-910011) protects the combustor from direct flame impingement and warps or burns through after years of high-fire use; a damaged shield shortens combustor life. The door glass (PG 265191GL, 11-3/16" × 17-1/2") is shared with the Models 26, 51, 74, 80 and 94NC and is the same panel whether your 91 is a freestanding stove or an insert.
Is my stove a 91?
The rating plate on the back or under the ash lip lists the model. The 91 is the largest Buck catalytic stove, sold both freestanding and as a fireplace insert, with the catalytic combustor behind the baffle at the top of the firebox and a temperature probe port for a catalyst thermometer. If your stove has no combustor, it is a non-catalytic Model 81 or 74 and uses different internals but the same door glass.
Model 91 maintenance notes
- Replace the door gasket whenever the glass comes out; a loose door is the most common cause of overfiring and short burn times.
- Inspect the combustor each fall. Clogged or crumbling cells mean it is time for a new combustor, not a new stove.
- Run the blower on low during normal burns; high only when you need fast heat. Motors last longer.
