Mertik Maxitrol GV60 Troubleshooting: Beep Codes, Pairing and Pilot Checks

By Fireplace Choice October 28, 2026 0 comments

The Mertik Maxitrol GV60 is a battery-powered remote ignition system with three parts: a GV60 gas valve, a G6R receiver that sparks the pilot and drives the valve's flame motor, and a G6R handset. It is used in Empire VFSE vent-free log sets (2022 manual) and VFIU Loft burners, Valor GV60 PLUS and MAX fireplaces, several Hearthstone gas stoves and the original Regency Horizon HRI3E / Liberty LRI3E insert. Mertik Maxitrol is the older name of the same maker, Maxitrol, so the part number on the label decides, not the name (Maxitrol GV60 manual).

How to Tell You Have a Mertik Maxitrol GV60 System

Open the lower louver or access panel and read three labels:

  • Valve: marked GV60, with a main valve knob and, if fitted, a separate MANUAL knob (MAN / ON).
  • Receiver: a box with a RESET button, joined to the valve by an 8-wire cable. The label reads G6R-R3AM (standard) or G6R-R3AU (universal). A G6R-R3AUT, for a second thermocouple, has a yellow sticker on the back. R4 numbers are European parts.
  • Handset: label on the back or in the battery area. G6R-H3S is standard, G6R-H3D has a display, G6R-H3T has a timer and thermostat (for example G6R-H3T5, G6R-H3T5-ZV, G6R-H3TV4). North American G6R handsets run on 315 MHz (FCC ID RTD-G6R) and take one 9 V battery.

Order the exact number on your label, suffix included. Maxitrol says a replacement handset for a North American (CSA) model must carry the same part number, and current G6R parts do not work with older G6R or Symax electronics. Not every GV60 fireplace uses the same handset:

Look-alikes that are not G6R

  • Valor 10 (GV60 SYMAX): the handset takes two AAA batteries and counts 1 to 8 while pairing. It is a two-way 918 MHz system (Valor 200A, 1100M, 1400M, 1500K, 1600K, 1700K, 1800K, 2100K, 2200K, 2500K, 2700K, 700R, 780R, 1000M); G6R parts do not fit.
  • Older GV34 systems: Mertik's G30 ultrasonic remote (G30-ZRHTT handset, G30-ZRRTT receiver with a sensor window) on motorized GV34 valves, and Valor's GV34 remote (handset 4000327, receiver 4000328) on older 738, 739-72 and RF24B units. Replace them by label number.
  • A receiver with a LEARN button and an OFF/REMOTE switch: the Empire VFSV remote (transmitter R10614, receiver R10615 natural gas or R10616 propane), not Mertik. The 2025 Empire VFSE uses an Eco-Flow module (R13121) and remote R13271 instead.
  • Regency HRI3E / LRI3E -1 and -11, LRI6E / HRI6E: SIT Proflame; see our SIT Proflame 2 troubleshooting guide.
  • Enviro Sonnet: an older Maxitrol remote coded with DIP switches; current G6R parts do not fit.

Still unsure? Try our guide to identifying your gas fireplace or the fireplace remote finder, or send us photos of both labels.

Batteries: What the Handset and Receiver Take

  • Handset: one 9 V alkaline battery. Display handsets show a battery icon; on others the red LED gets darker.
  • Receiver: four 1.5 V AA alkaline batteries (in the receiver or a battery box), or the Maxitrol G60-ZMA3 mains adapter. Use only Maxitrol's adapter or one Maxitrol approves.
  • Replace receiver batteries at the start of each heating season. Do not mix old and new cells or brands, and never pry batteries out with a metal tool; it can ruin the receiver.

Changing batteries does not erase the pairing. Four fresh AA cells read about 6 V; Mertik Maxitrol's troubleshooting chart treats 5.5 to 5 V as weak and below 5 V as too low to light the pilot.

How to Pair (Synchronize) the Handset and Receiver

The two come paired from the factory. Pair again after replacing either one, or when the receiver ignores a handset with good batteries.

  1. Put fresh batteries in the handset and the receiver (or its battery holder).
  2. Press and hold the receiver's RESET button until you hear a short beep, then a long beep. Release. (Valor: use a sharp object. Regency HRI3E / LRI3E: use the tool stored under the glass door.)
  3. Within 20 seconds, press and hold the handset's small flame button until you hear two short beeps. The code is set.
  4. One long beep means pairing failed or the wiring is wrong. Start again.

It can take a few tries: wait a minute between attempts, and after three failures remove the receiver batteries for two minutes. A GV60 receiver has no LEARN button, the handset has no IGNITE button, and there is no spark module to pair. Maxitrol describes pairing the receiver with a handset; none of the maker documents describe adding a second handset to the same receiver. Some older Mertik charts say a long signal confirms the code; the current Maxitrol manual says two short beeps.

GV60 Beep Codes: What Each Sound Means

These are the sounds described in Maxitrol's manual and in the Mertik Maxitrol troubleshooting chart printed in Empire's manuals. Any other pattern is not documented by the maker.

What you hear When What it means / what to do
One short beep You press OFF and the large flame button together (or ON on a wall switch) Normal: start sequence begun. Release the buttons.
Continuing beeps While the pilot sparks Normal: ignition in progress. Main gas opens once the pilot is proven.
Three short, fast beeps After a start attempt Ignition failed. If the pilot lit and then dropped out, the receiver batteries are weak (5.5 to 5 V).
Beeping, but the pilot never lights During start Receiver batteries below 5 V. Replace them.
Frequent short beeps for about 3 seconds Each time the flame motor turns Receiver batteries low. Very low batteries shut the fire off, pilot included.
One continuous tone of about 5 seconds, no ignition You try to start the fire ON/OFF switch at the valve on O (OFF), a loose wire, bent pins on the 8-wire connector, or a failed receiver or valve. Check the switch first.
No sound, no ignition You try to start the fire With fresh batteries and a fresh pairing, the maker's chart points to the receiver.
Beeping, motor moves slightly and back, no spark During start The spark (ignition) wire is not connected at the receiver.
Short then long beep; later two short beeps Pairing Normal: receiver ready, then code set. One long beep or a long continuous signal instead means pairing failed; repeat it.
Three or two short beeps After holding a flame button while putting the battery in a display handset Normal: 8-hour turn-down switched off (three) or on (two).
Long beep, later a short beep G6R-R3AUT receiver (yellow sticker) after the main burner failed to light Restart is blocked for 2 minutes while the second thermocouple cools. The short beep means you can try again.

Shut-Off and Turn-Down Timers: 5-Day vs 7-Day

If the fire went out completely after days with no flame change, the receiver's shut-off timer may have turned it off. Start it again with OFF plus the large flame button. The timer depends on the receiver's age:

  • Current North American receivers (Maxitrol 2025): 7-day shut-off with no flame change. The G6R-R3AU also turns down to pilot after 8 hours without motor movement, or if the receiver overheats.
  • Earlier receivers (R11575 kit manual, Empire 2019 and 2022, Regency 2016, Hearthstone Champlain II): 5-day shut-off and turn-down to pilot after 6 hours without a flame change.
  • Valor GV60 PLUS (2024): 7-day shut-off and 8-hour turn-down; Valor says the 7-day feature needs receiver code LC and handset code FS. Its GV60BRK handset ("Valor PLUS 1-HR FEATURE") cuts the turn-down to one hour.

If the receiver loses power, the valve stays where it was and the pilot safety keeps working.

Troubleshooting in Order

Safety first: if you smell gas, do not operate the fireplace or any electrical switch. Leave the building and call your gas supplier.

  1. Batteries: fresh 9 V in the handset, four fresh AA in the receiver (or check the mains adapter).
  2. Switch and knobs: ON/OFF switch at the valve on I; MANUAL knob (if fitted) on ON (fully counterclockwise), because in MAN the valve will not light automatically or open main gas; main valve knob on ON.
  3. Listen: match the beeps to the table above.
  4. Pair again if the receiver does not respond to the handset.
  5. Signal: metal around the receiver shortens range. Straighten or move the receiver antenna, and keep it off the ignition cable and other wires; contact can make the receiver inoperable.
  6. Wiring: the 8-wire cable must be seated with straight pins at both ends. If sparking stops after the first spark, tighten the ground connection at the valve.
  7. Spark but no pilot: confirm gas is on. Air in the pilot line can take several start attempts to clear. Then check the pilot setup and thermocouple wire polarity.
  8. Pilot lights, then the valve shuts off 10 to 60 seconds after sparking stops: the thermocouple is not making enough voltage or the circuit has too much resistance. On vented units the pilot flame should cover 3/8 to 1/2 inch of the thermocouple. Measured in millivolts at the spade connector beside the magnet nut, the chart calls for at least 5 mV. The interrupter block goes a quarter turn past finger tight (a second quarter turn at most); overtightening shorts the circuit. Then suspect the thermocouple, low inlet gas pressure and, last, the valve. Our thermocouple testing guide covers the meter work.
  9. Manual test (valves with a MANUAL knob): turn the main valve knob to OFF, the MANUAL knob to MAN and the ON/OFF switch (if fitted) to O, then wait five minutes for any gas to clear. If you smell gas, stop. Set the switch back to I, hold the manual pilot button in and light the pilot with a match (or with the piezo, after moving the ignition cable from the receiver to the valve), and keep holding about a minute. If it goes out, wait five minutes before trying again. If it will not stay lit after several tries, turn the main valve knob to OFF and call a technician.
  10. Pilot on, no main burner: the MANUAL knob is on MAN, the valve is turned down to pilot (hold the large flame button), or the valve has failed.

Gas pressure checks, valve replacement and any leak belong to a licensed gas technician. The GV60 valve has no serviceable parts; never take it apart.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my Mertik Maxitrol gas fireplace beeping?

Frequent short beeps for about 3 seconds each time the flame motor turns mean the receiver's AA batteries are low. One short beep and continuing beeps at start-up are normal. Three fast beeps after a start attempt mean ignition failed, often from weak receiver batteries.

How do I reset or re-pair a Mertik Maxitrol remote?

Hold the receiver's RESET button until you hear a short beep and then a long beep, release, and within 20 seconds hold the handset's small flame button until two short beeps sound. You do not need to re-pair after changing batteries.

Why won't my Mertik Maxitrol fireplace turn on?

Check batteries in both parts, the ON/OFF switch at the valve (Empire's chart lists that switch first for a 5-second tone), the MANUAL knob on ON, and the pairing. A fire that shut itself off after 5 or 7 days unused restarts with OFF plus the large flame button.

Is a G6R-R3AN the same as a G6R-R3AM?

Maxitrol's GV60 manual lists no G6R-R3AN. The North American standard receiver is G6R-R3AM and the universal is G6R-R3AU. Order the exact number on your receiver label.

Where can I find the G6R-R3AM manual?

Maxitrol publishes the GV60 installation and operating instructions on its own site. Your fireplace manual, such as Empire's VFSE manual, adds the troubleshooting chart and part numbers.
