IntelliFire Troubleshooting: IntelliFire Plus and IntelliFire Touch Codes, Pairing and Parts

By Fireplace Choice October 28, 2026 0 comments

IntelliFire is the electronic ignition Hearth & Home Technologies (HHT) builds into the gas fireplaces and inserts it sells as Heat & Glo, Heatilator, Quadra-Fire, Majestic and Monessen. Three generations are in homes today: the original IntelliFire, IntelliFire Plus (RC300-style remotes) and IntelliFire Touch (touchscreen RC400 or RC450). They light the same way, but their codes, remotes and parts do not mix, so first find out which one you have.

How to tell which IntelliFire system you have

With the fireplace off and cool, remove the lower decorative front to reach the control cavity beside the gas valve. The module tells you the system; the remote confirms it.

System Module in the control cavity Remote and wall controls Power
IntelliFire (original and 3-volt) Heat & Glo: the "green IPI module" (HHT's kit instructions show it with a separate WSK300 module, keypad and Hi/Lo solenoid). Heatilator Novus NDV/NBV "I" models: module 593-592 on a 3-volt valve. Wired wall controls such as the IntelliSwitch200 (WSK200-HNG). No HHT document we found shows a handheld remote learning to the green module; HHT's upgrade kit swaps in an IntelliFire Plus module before adding an RC300. 3-volt transformer or two D cells (Novus)
IntelliFire Plus Black module with ON/OFF/REMOTE switch, LEARN button, status LED and NG/LP selector; receiver built in. AUX200 or AUX300 box for the fan. RC100 wall control, RC200, or RC300 LCD remote with docking station (3 AAA): RC300-HNG (Heat & Glo), -HTL (Heatilator), -QDF (Quadra-Fire), -MON-VFL (Monessen vent-free). 6-volt transformer; 4 AA backup
IntelliFire Touch 1.0 IFT-ECM with three-position switch, pairing hole and LED, plus a plug-in RF module; an IFT-ACM runs fan, lights or power vent. Wi-Fi-ready ECMs carry a Wi-Fi sticker. IFT-RC400 touchscreen (4 AAA) and IFT-RC150 wireless wall switch (2 AA). 6-volt transformer; 4 AA backup
IntelliFire Touch 2.0 ECM 2.0 (2564-130) with RF module 2.0 (2564-120). In the HHT documents we checked: Monessen Artisan AVFL...NIF/PIF. IFT2-RC450 touchscreen with wall mount (4 AAA) and IFT-RC150U wall switch. 6-volt transformer; 4 AA backup

Model numbers help but do not settle it. Many Touch units carry -IFT (NNXT36-IFT, QFI35FB-IFT), but not all. An -IPI or "I" suffix only means electronic ignition: the 6000CLX-IPI and NEVO4236I use IntelliFire Plus module 2166-347, the NDV4236I-B the 3-volt module. Still unsure? See what type of gas fireplace you have or send us a photo of the module.

How IntelliFire lights

All three are intermittent pilot ignition (IPI): no pilot burns between fires unless you turn on Touch's Cold Climate mode. On a call for flame the module sparks the igniter and opens pilot gas. When the pilot flame wraps the sensor rod, a small current flows through it (flame rectification), and the main burner opens, 4 to 8 seconds later on IntelliFire Plus. Normal behavior:

  • IntelliFire Touch sparks 8 seconds, pauses 2, and repeats for a 60- or 90-second trial.
  • Switched to REMOTE, the green LED blinks three times and the module beeps. Slow green blinking after that is a radio channel search and can take several minutes.
  • IntelliFire Plus and Touch shut the flame off after 9 hours without a command.
  • IntelliFire Touch's Cold Climate mode keeps only the pilot lit to reduce condensation. Hold the ECM Pilot button one second: two green blinks and two beeps mean on.

IntelliFire blink and error codes

On a lockout, IntelliFire Plus beeps three times and keeps flashing its code. IntelliFire Touch double-beeps and repeats a red/green pattern: count the red flashes, then the green.

System Code Meaning Check first
IntelliFire Plus 1 flash NG/LP selector not fully seated, or damaged Turn it gently until it stops on your gas type; if it spins freely, replace the module.
IntelliFire Plus 2 flashes Too little voltage from the ignition coil to the igniter Clear the lockout and retry; if it repeats, replace the module.
IntelliFire Plus 3 flashes Pilot sparked (maybe lit) for 60 seconds; main never opened Gas pressure, pilot leads, shorted sense lead, dirty sensor rod, igniter or hood.
Touch 1.0 and 2.0 2 red, 1 green Pilot valve solenoid not detected ("Error Pilot Flame") Orange wire at the valve, harness, pilot solenoid 38-42 ohms.
Touch 1.0 and 2.0 2 red, 2 green Spark coil failure inside the ECM Replace the ECM.
Touch 1.0 and 2.0 3 red, 1 green No ignition or no flame sensing ("Appliance Safely Disabled") Gas supply, igniter gap, sensor rod, ground.
Touch 1.0 5 red, 1 green Power vent error (power vent or SMART-WALL only) Vent blower, pressure switch, venting.
Touch 2.0 4 red, 1 green 110 VAC on the wired wall switch Rewire; the switch is low voltage only.
Touch 2.0 6 red, 1 green Oxygen depletion sensor error, or Heat Management load unplugged ODS and Heat Management connections.
Touch 2.0 7 red, 1 green Power vent port error Power vent connection.

To clear a lockout: slide the module switch to OFF (on IntelliFire Plus, remove any backup batteries if house power is on), wait five minutes for gas to clear, then slide it to REMOTE. A Touch ECM beeps once and flashes three green when it restarts correctly. Do not cycle the switch more than once in five minutes. If it locks out again, or will not light after three tries, call a qualified service technician.

Other signals: an RC150 or RC150U whose LED keeps blinking red every few seconds has low batteries (HHT gives every 3 seconds for the RC150; its RC150U documents say every 3 or every 5). RC400 "Remote Control Communication Error" means the ECM lost power, is off REMOTE, or its master reset switch is off. "Schedule maintenance" appears after 300 hours of use; it is a service reminder, not a fault.

Troubleshooting checks, in the order a technician works

HHT writes these steps for qualified technicians. Steps 1 and 2 suit a homeowner; meter tests are a technician's job. If you smell gas, touch no switches, leave and call your gas supplier. See also gas fireplace clicking but not lighting.

1. Power, batteries and battery backup

  • Breaker, 120 VAC junction box and master reset switch (if equipped). The junction box must not be on a wall-switched circuit; HHT says that overrides the safety lockout.
  • Transformer output: 5.7-6.3 VDC on IntelliFire Touch (replace below 5.5 or if unstable); the IntelliFire Plus manual gives 6.4-6.6 VDC.
  • Backup: 4 AA cells, polarity correct or the module is damaged. Touch packs should read above 4.2 V, Plus at least 4 V. HHT's parts lists show a replaceable fuse in the pack (250 V, 3 A on Touch; 1 A on Plus), so check it if fresh cells do nothing.
  • Batteries are for outages only: remove them when power returns. On batteries the fan and lights do not run and the spark is weaker. The 3-volt IntelliFire takes its transformer or two D cells, never both.

2. Selector switch and wall switch

  • REMOTE lets the remote and wall switch work; ON lights on HI with no adjustment (a quick test without the remote); OFF ignores everything. On Touch, pause 1-2 seconds in each position.
  • IntelliFire Plus: a wired wall switch left ON overrides the remote. IntelliFire Touch follows whichever control spoke last.

3. Igniter, spark and wiring

  • Clicks but no spark: igniter (orange "I") wire loose, damaged or touching metal, or the black harness ground off the chassis.
  • Igniter-to-hood gap about 0.095-0.135 in. (2.41-3.43 mm). On Touch, HHT says the gap is set at the factory (0.1-0.13 in.) and the spark and sensor electrodes are not adjustable.
  • Weak spark points to low voltage. Check the orange and green valve wires for continuity and heat damage; never put 120 V on wall switch wires.

4. Flame sensing

  • Signs: the pilot lights but keeps sparking, then locks out, or the fire runs a few minutes and shuts off.
  • With the glass on, the pilot flame must engulf the sensor rod. Check log placement, soot bridging rod and hood, and on IntelliFire Plus the rear refractory bracket.
  • Polish the rod with fine steel wool, 320-grit emery cloth or a Scotch-Brite pad. Never paint the pilot, and never test with a lighter wand: a false flame causes a lockout.
  • Technician tests: sense lead under 1 ohm; on Plus, at least 0.14 microamps of flame current. A cracked insulator means a new pilot assembly.

5. Gas supply and valve

  • Gas shutoff open; inlet pressure within the rating plate.
  • Touch: pilot solenoid 38-42 ohms, main 58-62 ohms; outside that, replace the valve. Plus: the module should send 1.5-1.8 VDC to the pilot solenoid; below 1.5 V replace the module, otherwise the valve.
  • Flame height stuck: the stepper motor (each coil pair 4.5-5.5 ohms on Touch; not sold alone). On Plus, slide the switch OFF and back to REMOTE to reset it after a power cut.

6. The module, last

Replace it after power, ground, wiring and pilot check out, or when a code points at it. On a new IFT-ECM, copy the old one's 50/30 and LP/NG switch settings, then re-pair the remotes.

Pairing remotes and wall switches

Pair with the fireplace cool and the module in REMOTE; if the LED is slow-blinking green, wait until it stops.

IntelliFire Plus: RC300

  1. Press and release LEARN with a paper clip. The module beeps and blinks green for 10 seconds.
  2. Press POWER on the RC300 in that window. A double beep means it is programmed.

The module takes up to three wireless controls; HHT recommends one RC300. To clear them, press LEARN and touch nothing for 10 seconds. An RC300 in STANDBY will not program (press ON/OFF twice). Keep it within 30 feet.

IntelliFire Touch 1.0: RC400 and RC150

  1. RC150 only: first take the cover off with a small flat screwdriver at the tab on the bottom.
  2. Press the pairing button through the hole in the IFT-ECM with a paper clip. It beeps and blinks green for 14 seconds.
  3. RC400: tap the gray bar at the top of the screen, then the pairing icon. RC150: press its pairing button with a paper clip; its red LED blinks.
  4. A double beep means paired; if time runs out, repeat.

One RC400 and one RC150 per ECM, with the RF module plugged in. Re-pair after adding an ACM, fan, lights or power vent. If an RC400 sticks on "Now pairing remote to product", remove one AAA, press the ECM pairing button, refit the battery, then tap the gray bar and pairing icon. A dead screen with good batteries may be the child lock switch under the battery door.

IntelliFire Touch 2.0: RC450 and RC150U

Same steps with a window of up to 60 seconds, for one RC150U and up to two RC450s. ECM 2.0 accepts only RF module 2.0 (2564-120), not the older 2326-120, so an RC400 kit will not work on it. After adding an accessory, power the ECM down and back up.

What works with what

  • RC300 is IntelliFire Plus only; RC400 and RC150 are IntelliFire Touch 1.0 only. HHT's SLMR-IFT-UPK kit converts select Plus models to Touch.
  • RC150U works on Touch 1.0 and 2.0 (its kit has both RF modules).
  • Touch 1.0 with the RF module still on your IFT-ECM? The RC400 remote alone (SRV2326-110) is enough. If not, get the IFT-RC400 kit (remote, RF module and ACM).
  • The IFT-WFM Wi-Fi module needs an IFT-ECM with the Wi-Fi sticker; without it, use the WFM-RETROFIT kit.

FAQ

Why won't my Heat & Glo IntelliFire fireplace turn on?

No light and no beep at the module points to power: breaker, transformer, reset switch or backup batteries. Off REMOTE, the remote and wall switch are ignored. A flashing code is a lockout: match it above, clear it once, and call a technician if it returns.

Why is my IntelliFire fireplace beeping?

Most beeps are normal: one when the module is ready or a pairing button is pressed, two when a remote pairs. Three beeps and a flashing LED (Plus), or a double beep with a red/green pattern (Touch), is a lockout.

How do I turn on an IntelliFire fireplace without the remote?

Slide the module switch to ON. The fire lights on HI with no adjustment; on IntelliFire Touch it still shuts off after 9 hours. In a power outage, put 4 AA cells in the backup pack first (two D cells on Heatilator's 3-volt units).

Why is my Heat & Glo remote not working?

Fresh batteries first, then check the module is powered and on REMOTE, and on IntelliFire Plus that a wired wall switch is not left ON. No re-pairing is needed after an outage: Touch remotes reconnect within about four minutes once power returns.
