SIT Proflame 2 Troubleshooting: IFC Blink Codes, Beeps and Fixes
SIT Proflame 2 is SIT's remote and electronic ignition system built around the IFC (Integrated Fireplace Control): a 120-volt board with battery backup that sparks the pilot, proves the flame, opens the SIT Proflame gas valve and runs flame height, fan and lights from a 315 MHz remote. It is used in gas fireplaces and inserts from Empire, Superior and Astria (IHP), Enviro, Kozy Heat, Mendota, Ambiance and Regency, among others. This guide covers codes, checks, pairing and parts; for everyday remote functions see how to use the SIT Proflame 2 remote.
How to tell you have Proflame 2
SIT lists every remote for one receiver series only, so confirm the generation before buying parts:
- The code on the remote. Look for a SIT code starting with 0.584 on the remote's label, box or manual. IFC series (Proflame 2): handhelds 0.584.040, .042 and .080; wall mounts 0.584.043, .044, .045, .046, .048, .049 and .090. GT series (Proflame 1): 0.584.021, .022, .023, .026 and .027.
- The module. Proflame 2 has an IFC board in a cool spot of the appliance, often below the firebox behind an access panel. It plugs into 120 V and has a holder for 4 AA backup batteries, a sync button (SIT calls it SW1) with an amber LED, and a red diagnostic LED. Proflame 1 uses a separate battery receiver with an ON/REMOTE/OFF slider and a hole marked PRG.
- Your manual's parts list. Proflame 2 units list an IFC or "Proflame II" module, such as Empire R12383, IHP H8656, Kozy Heat 700-652 or Mendota 05-02-00416 (SIT 0.584.665). SIT's own IFC codes include 0.584.305 (Complete), 0.584.306 (Standard) and 0.584.307 (Basic).
Two things do not tell you the generation. Color: some fireplace makers say silver means Proflame 1, but SIT's code list shows the Proflame 2 handhelds 0.584.040, .042 and .080 as silver and the Proflame 1 GTMFS 0.584.027 as black. The valve: SIT 880, 885 and 886 Proflame valves are used by both generations. Also, some Proflame 2 units (Superior DRL3500, Astria Envy, Enviro E33I) put the backup batteries in a separate holder or wall plate with a three-position slider and a PRG hole (IHP) or reset button (Enviro), which looks like a Proflame 1 receiver. If there is also an IFC board on 120 V, it is Proflame 2.
Not sure? Find your fireplace model number, try our fireplace remote finder, or check what type of gas fireplace you have in case it is IntelliFire, Skytech or Mertik Maxitrol.
How Proflame 2 lights: IPI and CPI
Press ON and the IFC beeps once, checks that it does not already sense a flame, then sparks the pilot about once a second. A flame sensor rod proves the pilot by flame rectification, and the main burner opens about 5 seconds later.
- Two tries, then lockout. SIT lists 2 ignition trials of up to 60 seconds, with a 30-second pause between them (Kozy Heat and Enviro say about 35).
- IPI or CPI. IPI lights the pilot only when you call for fire; CPI keeps it lit, which helps in cold weather. If the fireplace has an IPI/CPI switch, the remote can select CPI only while that switch is on CPI.
- Normal shut-offs. Pilot-on-demand boards turn a continuous pilot off after 7 days without a main-burner call, and every board shuts off briefly within 24 hours of continuous pilot to test its safety circuit, then repeats your last command.
- Power outages. On battery backup the burner runs but the fan and lights do not. Fan-assisted (power vent) models cannot run on batteries at all.
Proflame 2 codes: red LED, beeps and remote display
The remote has no error codes; SIT's transmitter manual lists only a low-battery icon. "Proflame 2 error codes" means the red LED on the IFC board and its beeps. The LED repeats its count with a pause of a few seconds.
| Signal | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Red LED, 1 flash | Backup batteries low (Kozy Heat and Enviro: under 4 V) | Replace the 4 AA backup batteries |
| Red LED, 2 flashes | Flame signal sensed before the pilot was lit (SIT: "parasitic pilot flame"); the IFC will not start | Reset once; if it repeats, call your dealer or a technician (Kozy Heat says to contact your dealer) |
| Red LED, 3 flashes | Lockout: pilot not proven in 2 tries, or flame lost too many times | Reset (below), then run the ignition checks |
| 3 beeps, amber LED on | Sync mode, ready to learn a remote | Press ON on the remote; 4 beeps mean it learned it |
| Double beep on ON or OFF | Backup batteries low; SIT says no more commands are accepted until they are replaced | Replace the 4 AA backup batteries |
| No beep at all | Command not reaching the IFC; Enviro also lists low backup batteries | Checks 1 to 3 below |
| Battery icon on the remote | Remote's 3 AAA batteries low | Replace them |
How to reset a Proflame 2 lockout
Turn the fire off with the remote, wait at least 2 seconds and turn it on again, or switch the fireplace ON/OFF switch (or battery holder slider) off for 2 seconds and back on. For a full reset, turn off the gas to the fireplace (SIT asks for this before removing or reinserting batteries), unplug the IFC and remove the backup batteries for a few seconds. The IPI/CPI switch does not reset a lockout, but it is a quick test: set CPI on a powered IFC, and if the pilot does not try to light, the board is locked out. If it locks out again, stop resetting and find the cause below.
Proflame 2 checks, in the order a technician makes them
Safety first: if you smell gas, do not touch any switch, leave the house and call your gas supplier from outside. Gas pressure, valve and wiring work belongs to a licensed technician. Turn the fireplace off and let it cool before opening a panel.
1. Power and switches
The IFC runs on 120 V, with the backup batteries only for outages: check the breaker and outlet. The main ON/OFF switch must be ON, because the remote can light the burner only while that input is closed. If the battery holder has a slider, set it to REMOTE.
2. Batteries
Turn off the gas to the fireplace first (SIT asks for this before removing or reinserting batteries), then fit fresh batteries in the remote (3 AAA) and the backup holder (4 AA). A double beep means low backup batteries, and Kozy Heat and Enviro list low batteries first when the fireplace ignores the remote. SIT warns that batteries should not sit above 129 °F (54 °C); if your holder sits somewhere hot, ask your installer about moving it.
3. Pairing
No beep with fresh batteries can mean the IFC has lost the remote's code; Kozy Heat and Enviro say to pair it again (steps below). A replacement remote always needs pairing.
4. Reset, then watch the ignition
- No spark. Check the spark wire and pilot connections and the electrode's position at the pilot. SIT wants the spark wire at least 1 inch from the electronic controls. Next suspects: pilot assembly, harness, IFC.
- Sparks but no pilot flame. Open every gas shut-off (there may be more than one), check the propane tank, and allow a few tries after service while air purges. A technician then checks the pilot orifice, inlet pressure and whether the valve's EV1 coil gets voltage during ignition; Empire says voltage there means a bad valve, none means a bad IFC.
- Pilot lights, keeps sparking, then locks out. The flame is not being proven. It must wrap the tip of the sensor rod. Check the sensor wire and clean its connection at the IFC, and check the pilot's ground wire (Empire). A small flame points to low gas pressure or a damaged pilot head (Enviro). Next part: the pilot assembly.
- Pilot holds, main burner will not light. Check the ON/OFF switch, the remote's flame level (press UP if it shows OFF) and thermostat mode with the room already warmer than the set point. A technician then checks the burner orifice and the valve's main coil.
- Pilot goes out when the burner opens. Gas pressure drops at the pilot; have the supply pressure checked.
- Burner lights, then shuts off. Check flame sensing, venting and gas pressure. After two flame losses the IFC waits up to a minute before reopening the burner. When the fireplace has not established draft, IHP says to switch to CPI (pilot on), wait two minutes, then relight.
- Pilot never goes off. CPI is selected; set IPI.
- Flame height will not change. SMART mode is on, or the valve's stepper motor is failing.
- Fan or lights dead. Neither runs on battery backup. The comfort fan also waits 5 minutes after ignition to start and keeps running 12 minutes after shut-off. Otherwise see gas fireplace blower troubleshooting.
- Thermostat mode does nothing. The remote reads the room where it sits. Keep it in the room, away from the fireplace, and set a target above room temperature.
5. Wiring and the IFC board
Label wires before unplugging anything. When everything above checks out and the board still will not spark or respond, the IFC is the last suspect. Replace it with the same SIT code or your fireplace maker's part number. Note that SIT ships boards able to run FAN or ATMO mode set to ATMO (jumper JP1 in place); fan-assisted fireplaces need JP1 removed.
How to pair a Proflame 2 remote
- Put fresh batteries in the remote (3 AAA) and backup holder (4 AA), set any holder slider to REMOTE, and make sure the IFC is plugged in.
- Press the sync button once: SW1 on the IFC, sometimes called the remote sync or learn button. Some fireplaces put it on the battery holder or wall plate instead (Empire's SWI button, pressed with a paper clip; IHP's PRG hole; Enviro's reset button). The IFC beeps 3 times and the amber LED lights.
- Within about 10 seconds (Kozy Heat says 5), press ON on the remote. Four beeps mean it is paired.
- To add a second remote, press ON on it while still in sync mode; otherwise press the sync button again to finish.
No remote? Press the sync button (3 beeps), then press it again. The IFC closes sync without learning a remote and runs from the fireplace's IPI/CPI and ON/OFF switches (Kozy Heat: main burner on high only).
Which remote: an IFC-series transmitter. Our SIT 0.584.040 Proflame 2 remote is the full-function GTMFSLA handheld (thermostat, flame, fan, split flow, light, aux) shown in SIT's Standard and Complete wiring diagrams; Enviro specifies the same 0.584.040 for its E33I. A Proflame 1 (GT-series) remote is not listed for IFC receivers.
Proflame Connect and Wi-Fi
App control needs a Wi-Fi-capable IFC, SIT's Wi-Fi dongle on the IFC's X0A serial port and the Proflame Connect app (Regency names Proflame Connect Plus). SIT's code list marks the connect feature on IFC boards 0.584.665 and 0.584.666 and on remotes 0.584.080 and 0.584.090, not on the 0.584.040, and Regency lists the remotes it approves for its Wi-Fi units. Regency's Wi-Fi guide adds: the dongle joins 2.4 GHz networks only; solid red and green LEDs mean setup mode, alternating red and green means connecting, solid green means connected; hold the yellow button 5 to 10 seconds to re-pair. Thermostat modes in the app need the paired remote with live batteries, because the remote measures the room temperature; without it the app runs in manual mode only.

Proflame 2 FAQ
Does the Proflame 2 remote show error codes?
No. The remote only shows a battery icon when its own batteries are low. Fault codes come from the red LED on the IFC board: 1 flash for low backup batteries, 2 flashes for a flame signal at start-up, 3 flashes for lockout.
Why does my Proflame 2 fireplace beep twice?
A double beep when you press ON or OFF means the 4 AA backup batteries are low. SIT says the IFC ignores further commands until you replace them.
How do I reset a Proflame 2 fireplace?
Turn it off with the remote, wait 2 seconds and turn it back on, or switch the fireplace ON/OFF switch off for 2 seconds. For a full reset, unplug the IFC and remove the backup batteries for a few seconds. If it locks out again, work through the ignition checks above.
Will a Proflame 1 remote work with Proflame 2?
No. Treat the two generations as not interchangeable: SIT lists each remote for one receiver series only, GT series for Proflame 1 and IFC series for Proflame 2, and no SIT document says they cross over. For a Proflame 2 fireplace, buy an IFC-series remote. If yours is the older system, see our SIT Proflame 1 troubleshooting guide.
