Skytech and American Flame AF-4000 Troubleshooting: Remotes, Receivers and Beep Codes
Skytech makes aftermarket remotes for gas fireplaces, stoves and gas logs. Its American Flame line makes gas log valve kits and the AF-4000 electronic ignition control used in AFVK-SP log kits and some factory fireplaces. A Skytech remote switches your fireplace's own valve; an AF-4000 is the ignition control itself.
How to tell which Skytech or American Flame system you have
Find the receiver: Skytech says it is usually near the logs, behind the lower front panel, or in the wall behind the fireplace switch. The date code is printed on the back of the transmitter; Skytech's warranty card asks for it along with the model.
| What you find | What you have |
|---|---|
| Battery box (4 AA) with an ON / REMOTE / OFF slide, a LEARN hole and two wires to the valve | Skytech dry-contact remote: 1001-A, 1001TH-A, 1001T/LCD-A, 3301, 5301, 5301P, SMART-BATT |
| Receiver plugged into a wall outlet | Skytech 110-120 VAC receiver: 1420-A, 1420TH-A and other 1410 / 1420 models, SMART-STAT |
| Receiver with a red and a black wire going to a solenoid or motor on the valve | Skytech 6-volt system (CON, CON-TH, MRCK) or an American Flame AF-LMF-R or -RV kit (the AF-LMF-RVS receiver uses a 4-pin plug to a step motor instead) |
| Black box beside the logs with OFF/REMOTE, O / I and Continuous Pilot switches, no separate receiver | American Flame AFVK-SP, -HL or -MHL kit with the AF-4000MOD-1 module (receiver built in) |
| Factory fireplace module with LEARN, REMOTE/OFF and Continuous Pilot switches and an AC adapter | Factory American Flame AF-4000 system (module label starts with AF-4000MOD) |
| American Flame valve box beside the logs with a PILOT / ON / OFF knob you push in to light the pilot by hand | American Flame AF-LMF standing pilot kit (AF-1000 valve, thermocouple) |

What a Skytech remote can and cannot control
- Millivolt valves: the receiver is a dry-contact switch on the TH and TH/TP terminals (either wire on either terminal).
- 24 VAC spark modules: the receiver sits in series between the 24 VAC transformer and the module's TH terminal.
- 6-volt kits (CON, MRCK, AF-LMF): a 4 AA receiver powers a latching solenoid (CON, AF-LMF-R) or a motor (MRCK servo motor valves, AF-LMF-RV and -RVS) on the valve; the CON receiver pulses 5.5 to 6.3 VDC. Connect red to red and black to black (the AF-LMF-RVS uses a 4-pin plug).
- Flame height: 1001 and 1420 models only switch on and off. Remote flame height needs a solenoid or motor (AFVK-SP-HL, AF-LMF-RV, MRCK).
- Factory systems: Skytech's manuals do not cover IntelliFire, SIT Proflame or Mertik Maxitrol GV60, which need their factory remote. See our IntelliFire, Proflame 2 and GV60 guides.
- Smart home: the Skytech 8001 works through any smart plug, including with existing 1001-A, 1001T-LCD-A, 1420-A and 1420T-LCD-A systems. SMART-STAT and SMART-BATT are thermostat remotes with no Wi-Fi or app listed.
Skytech remote not working: checks in order
On vented gas logs, open the damper first, then follow Skytech's order:
- Fresh alkaline batteries in both parts. Battery receivers take 4 AA (110 V receivers plug in instead); on/off transmitters a 12 V A23; LCD transmitters 2 AAA (the 5301 and 5301P, 4). Replace yearly, or when the four AA read under 5.3 V combined or the A23 under 9.0 V.
- Receiver switch in REMOTE. ON bypasses the remote; OFF disables it.
- Pilot lit, valve knob on ON (not PILOT). Electronic ignition fireplaces need 120 V power or their battery backup.
- Other switches OFF or REMOTE. On a new install, remove any short jumper wire across TH and TH/TP.
- Slide the receiver to ON. If the fire lights, the wiring is good; go back to REMOTE. If not, check the wires on TH and TH/TP, then recheck the pilot, valve knob and other switches above.
- Press ON or MODE. The receiver should beep and the fire light. No beep: re-learn (below).
- Range. Stay within 20 to 25 feet; metal and nearby 120 V wiring cut range.
- 110 V receivers: test the outlet with a lamp. In a power outage, use the receiver's ON position (millivolt fireplaces).
Remote works backwards? One wire is on TP instead of TH/TP, or red and black are crossed.
How to learn (pair) a Skytech transmitter
Needed on first use, after battery changes and for any replacement transmitter.
- Set the receiver switch to REMOTE; it will not learn in ON or OFF.
- Press and release the button inside the LEARN hole with a paper clip. The receiver beeps once.
- Within 5 seconds, press ON or MODE. Several beeps mean it is paired. Touch screens need one tap to wake, then one to send.
- No beeps? On 1001, 1420, 3002 and UN3 receivers, hold LEARN 10 seconds until three long beeps clear the memory, then repeat. On CON receivers, wait 1 to 2 minutes between tries.
Skytech's documents list no transmitter-only part number for the 1001-A series, so replace a lost remote with a complete kit. Other brands: see the fireplace remote sync guide.
Skytech receiver beep codes
| What you hear | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| 3 beeps every 4 seconds, fire off | Thermo Safety: receiver reached 130°F inside | Let it cool, then OFF and ON (beeping stops below 120°F). Test it out on the hearth, then relocate it or add an RS-1A or RS-2 shield |
| Rapid beeps for 10 seconds, then 1 every 4 seconds, fire off | Communication Safety: no transmitter signal for 2 hours (it checks in every 15 minutes) | Press ON or MODE to OFF, then ON. Check receiver batteries, range and metal near the receiver |
These alerts work only in ON, thermostat, program or timer mode. The 3301 and 5301 have both, the 1001TH-A and 1420TH-A only Communication Safety, the plain 1001-A neither. Skytech tech support: 855-498-8324.
How the American Flame AF-4000 system works
The AF-4000 is a spark-to-pilot system: the module sparks the pilot (igniter wire "I"), proves the flame (sensor wire "S") and opens the burner. In AFVK-SP kits the module is the AF-4000MOD-1, powered by an AF-4000BP pack (4 AA) or an optional AF-4000ADP24 adapter (120 VAC to 7.5 VDC; the pack stays connected). Factory systems can add an AC adapter and a fan and light extension module.
- Start and lockout: press ON (or rocker to "I") and the burner lights about 2 seconds after the pilot. If the pilot fails for 60 seconds, reset with OFF then ON; air in a new gas line can take a few tries.
- OFF/REMOTE switch: in OFF the rocker runs the fire and the module will not learn.
- Continuous Pilot: keeps the pilot burning (the usual reason it will not go out). The AFVK-SP shuts it off after 7 days without burner use.
- AFVK-SP limits: natural gas as shipped (LPK-18 or LPK-24 for propane), 18 to 30 inch logs, not for see-through fireplaces.
AF-4000 beep codes and error codes
| What you hear | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| One beep after LEARN, then a burst of rapid beeps | Ready to learn, then transmitter learned | Normal pairing |
| Three long beeps (LEARN held 10 seconds) | Memory cleared | Learn the transmitter again |
| 1 beep every second | Ignition Safety: pilot not lit within 60 seconds | OFF, then ON. Check gas supply, the PILOT plug on the valve, the "I" and "S" wires and the ground |
| 4 beeps every second | Sensor Safety: flame sensed before ignition, or sensor shorted to ground | OFF, then ON. A pilot burning with the valve off needs a new valve (technician); otherwise check the sensor rod and wires, pilot assembly, then module |
| 4 beeps every 2 seconds | Thermal Safety: module above 170°F | Cool below 160°F, then ON. Shield or move the module; keep the lower grille clear |
| 1 beep every 4 seconds | Communication Safety (factory LCD remotes): no check-in for 2 hours | New AAA batteries (1.4 V or more each), within 20 feet, remote off metal surfaces |
Release LEARN after the three long beeps. On modulating factory systems, a 20-second hold sets the gas type.
AF-4000 troubleshooting in the order a technician checks
American Flame reserves troubleshooting for a qualified technician. Do the visual checks yourself; leave meter tests, valve work and gas pressure to a licensed gas technician. If you smell gas, leave and call your gas supplier.
- Remote does nothing: REMOTE position, fresh batteries in remote and pack, then clear and re-learn. AC adapters should read 7.5 VDC (5.4 minimum).
- No spark: igniter on "I", sensor on "S", ground wire on unpainted metal. Look for a cracked insulator, an igniter touching metal, or a gap far from 1/8 inch.
- Sparks, no pilot: gas on, pilot screw not closed, pilot flame touching the sensor rod, PILOT plug seated. In new fireplaces, silicone residue on the rods is cleaned off with emery cloth.
- Pilot but no burner: check the MAIN plug and the module-to-valve ground. A technician can test the coils (990 to 1,230 ohms).
- No fan (factory systems): it starts 5 minutes after the burner lights and runs 12 minutes after shutoff.
Other valve types: why a gas fireplace pilot light won't stay lit.
American Flame AF-LMF valve kits
The AF-LMF series is a standing pilot kit for 18 to 30 inch vented natural gas logs: an AF-1000 valve (AF-1005 on the -RVS) with a hand-lit thermocouple pilot. The -R adds a solenoid, CON1001TX remote and UN3-RX receiver; the -RV a Hi/Lo motor, RCAF-1020TX and UN3-RX; the -RVS a step motor, RCAF-1035TX and RCAF-1035RX. Skytech's website and manual disagree on the -RVS remote, so match your old label.
- Pilot will not stay lit: hold the knob in 30 to 60 seconds, snug the thermocouple nut (finger tight plus a quarter turn), clean the thermocouple, then replace it or the pilot assembly. See how to test a thermocouple.
- Remote will not light the burner: pilot lit, knob on ON, receiver in REMOTE and learned, receiver batteries at 5.3 V or more combined, transmitter at 9 V or more.

FAQ
How do I program a Skytech fireplace remote?
Receiver in REMOTE, press and release LEARN, then press ON or MODE within 5 seconds. Several beeps confirm it.
Why is my gas fireplace beeping?
A Skytech receiver beeps 3 times every 4 seconds when too hot, and once every 4 seconds (after a rapid burst) when it loses the remote. An AF-4000 module beeps once a second after a failed pilot and 4 times a second for a sensor fault.
Will a Skytech remote work on my fireplace?
Skytech documents millivolt valves with TH and TH/TP terminals and 24 VAC spark modules, not IntelliFire, SIT Proflame or Mertik Maxitrol GV60 systems. A 110 V plug-in receiver will not answer the remote in a power outage, but its ON position still turns a millivolt fireplace on.
