SIT Proflame 1 Troubleshooting: GT/GTM Remotes, Receivers and DFC Boards

By Fireplace Choice October 28, 2026 0 comments

SIT Proflame 1 is SIT's original Proflame remote system, the GT series: a handheld transmitter and a separate battery-powered receiver wired to the gas valve. It comes in two kinds of fireplace: millivolt units with a standing pilot and a SIT 820 or 829 NOVA mV valve, and electronic-ignition units where the receiver works with a DFC (Digital Fireplace Control) board and a SIT 880, 885 or 886 Proflame valve. Empire, Superior and Astria models use it, and Lennox offers it in a retrofit kit for its Spectra LSS fireplaces.

How to tell you have Proflame 1

  1. The code on the remote. SIT's GT-series handhelds are 0.584.021 GT, 0.584.022 GTM, 0.584.023 GTMF and 0.584.026 / 0.584.027 GTMFS. The letters tell you the functions: GT is on/off and thermostat, M adds six flame levels (a stepper motor on the valve), F adds a Fan Control Module, S adds split flow (a second burner). Remotes coded 0.584.040, .042, .043, .044, .045, .046, .048, .049, .080 and .090 are Proflame 2.
  2. A separate receiver. The Proflame 1 receiver runs on 4 AA batteries and has a three-position slider (ON, REMOTE, OFF), a hole marked PRG and a 14-pin connector. SIT says it goes in a standard wall junction box or a cool spot inside the appliance, so look behind a wall switch plate or in the control compartment.
  3. The wiring. On millivolt units the receiver harness has wires labeled TH and TPTH that go to the valve, plus a "Motor" plug for the stepper on GTM systems. On electronic units you will also find a DFC board and either an AC/DC wall adapter or, on GTMF systems, the Fan Control Module (SIT 0.584.121).
  4. Your manual's parts list. Look for "DFC", "Proflame I" or a separate "Receiver Kit": Superior DRL2000 (DFC J7906, battery holder H8803, transformer H8006), Astria Montebello ST (DFC J7906, receiver kit H7277), Empire VFLB vent-free linear with the Proflame-IP option (control module R12907, receiver R11235, remote R11236).

Do not go by color: SIT's own list includes a black Proflame 1 remote (0.584.027) and silver Proflame 2 remotes. And watch two traps. Some Proflame 2 fireplaces (Superior DRL3500, Astria Envy, Enviro E33I) also have a wall-plate battery holder with a slider and a PRG hole or reset button; Proflame 2 always has an IFC board on 120 V; Proflame 1 has no IFC board. Second, one SIT DFC manual is headed "Proflame2 DFC", but SIT's DFC catalogue calls the board "Proflame 1 DFC" and pairs it only with GT-series remotes and receivers. A DFC board means Proflame 1.

Fault codes DFC only, and only with an optional signaling device Red LED on the IFC: 1, 2 or 3 flashes

If yours turns out to be Proflame 2, use our SIT Proflame 2 troubleshooting and error codes guide instead.

Proflame 1 beeps and codes

Signal What it means What to do
1 beep Receiver got the command Nothing
No beep when you press ON or OFF SIT: receiver batteries low. IHP also lists the slider not set to REMOTE and weak remote batteries Replace the receiver's 4 AA batteries first
3 beeps after pressing PRG Ready to learn a remote Press ON on the remote
4 beeps Remote learned Done
Battery icon on the remote Remote's 3 AAA batteries low Replace them
DFC: 1, 2 or 3 flashes or buzzes Only if an optional signaling device is plugged into the DFC's diagnostic port: 1 low battery, 2 flame signal at start-up, 3 lockout Most fireplaces have no such device; use the lockout test below

Proflame 1 checks, in order

Safety first: if you smell gas, do not touch any switch, leave the house and call your gas supplier from outside. Valve, gas pressure and wiring work belongs to a licensed technician. SIT says to turn off the gas before removing or reinserting the receiver batteries.

1. Batteries and the slider

Put fresh batteries in the remote (3 AAA) and the receiver (4 AA, polarity as marked on the cover), and set the receiver slider to REMOTE. If the receiver still does not beep, pair the remote again (steps below).

2. Use the manual bypass to split the problem in half

Slide the receiver switch to ON. SIT designed this position to bypass the remote, and the burner should come on if the valve is on. If it lights on ON but not from the remote, the fault is the remote, receiver or pairing. If it will not light on ON either, the problem is most likely on the gas or ignition side.

3. Millivolt (standing pilot) systems

  • The pilot must be lit, using the lighting instructions on your fireplace. On these systems the receiver only connects the thermopile to the valve's millivolt coil, so the burner can come on only while the pilot is lit.
  • Check that the TH and TPTH wires are tight on the matching valve terminals and the "Motor" plug is seated on the stepper (GTM).
  • Pilot lit, burner will not run even on bypass: test the thermopile and look at the valve. See how to test a fireplace thermopile and SIT 820 NOVA valve troubleshooting.

4. Electronic (DFC) systems

  • Power. The DFC runs from a 7 V DC wall adapter or the Fan Control Module, with the receiver batteries as backup. Check that the adapter is plugged in and the Fan Control Module switch is ON.
  • Lockout. After failed ignition or repeated flame loss the DFC shuts the gas and ignores commands. Reset: slide the receiver switch to OFF for at least 2 seconds, then ON for at least 2 seconds; or, with the slider on REMOTE, turn the remote off for 2 seconds and back on. Empire also lists turning the power off and back on. To test for lockout, switch to continuous (standing) pilot: a powered DFC in lockout will not try to light the pilot.
  • Fireplace on, no flame and no attempt to light. Gas shut-off closed or the DFC in lockout (Empire).
  • Pilot lit, igniter keeps sparking. Weak pilot gas or low pressure, a dirty igniter or flame sensor, a poor ground, a draft in the firebox, or a bent sensor (Empire). Next part: the pilot.
  • Pilot will not light or stay lit. Dirty sensor, loose sensor wire, poor ground, wrong gas pressure, a kinked pilot tube, then the pilot or valve.
  • Main burner does not light, pilot on. Low gas pressure, dirty burner ports, a blocked orifice, loose valve or module wires, then the valve.
  • Burner comes on, then goes out. The pilot flame must engulf the sensor, the vent may be blocked, or the fireplace has not built a proper draft yet. For the draft, IHP suggests setting the IPI/CPI switch to pilot ON (standing pilot), waiting two minutes, then relighting.
  • Room warm, fire will not come on. In thermostat mode the remote works as the room thermostat: move it away from the fireplace or raise the set point (Empire).
  • Normal events. Pilot-on-demand DFC versions turn a standing pilot off after 7 days without a burner call, and the DFC shuts off briefly after 24 hours of continuous pilot to test itself.

How to pair a Proflame 1 remote

  1. Install 4 AA batteries in the receiver and set the slider to REMOTE.
  2. Push the end of a paper clip into the hole marked PRG on the receiver's front cover. The receiver beeps 3 times.
  3. With 3 AAA batteries in the remote, press ON. Four beeps mean the receiver has learned that remote's code.

SIT's DFC manual gives a variant: start with the slider on OFF, press OFF on the remote after the 4 beeps (2 beeps), then move the slider to REMOTE and switch on the Fan Control Module if you have one.

Which remote: a GT-series transmitter with the functions your system has. A GTM remote runs flame height only if the valve has the stepper motor. Our SIT Proflame 1 remote, 0.584.022 GTM (R11236) is also the remote Empire lists as R11236 for its VFLB Proflame-IP models. Proflame 2 remotes such as the 0.584.040 are listed by SIT for IFC receivers only, and no SIT document says they run a GT receiver.

Proflame 1 FAQ

My remote is silver. Is it Proflame 1?

Not necessarily. SIT lists silver remotes in both generations, including the Proflame 2 0.584.040. Read the 0.584 code on the remote or check whether your fireplace has a separate PRG receiver and no IFC board.

Why doesn't my Proflame 1 receiver beep anymore?

SIT says a receiver with low batteries stops beeping when it gets an ON or OFF command. Replace its 4 AA batteries; if it still stays silent, re-pair the remote with the PRG button.

Will a Proflame 2 remote work on Proflame 1?

Do not count on it. SIT pairs each remote code with one receiver series, GT for Proflame 1 and IFC for Proflame 2, and no SIT document says they cross over. Buy a GT-series remote for a Proflame 1 receiver.

Where is the Proflame 1 receiver?

SIT allows it in a wall junction box or a cool spot inside the appliance. On Empire VFLB and Astria Montebello ST fireplaces it sits behind the wall switch plate, with its 4 AA batteries behind the plate.
